Sgt. Donald Allen Pate was born in Greene County to Carma Mc Lawhorn Pate and Allen Mac Pate. At an early age, because of his mother’s illness, he was sent to be raised by his uncle William A. Mc Lawhorn and his wife Ruby. He joined the US Army and serve in Alaska. After he was discharge from active duty, he joined the North Carolina National Guard and served in the 730th Maintenance Battalion at Butner, North Carolina. He died of cancer in 1991.
