Robert J. Moore was born on October 15, 1927 in Salem, Ohio. He attended grade school at Goshen High School in Damascus, Ohio. He transferred for his high schooling to a Quaker Boarding school known as Olney, located in Barnesville, Ohio. He graduated with the class in May 1946.
After graduation he worked at different jobs, all the while wanting his own business in the world of home decorating. After serving his country, he received degrees in this area.
On November 27, 1950, he departed the train station in Youngstown, Ohio to report for training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. There he received his six weeks of basic training. On January 15, 1951, he was shipped to Korea, landing at Inchon. From there he was shipped to the 38th Parallel. He was assigned to “H” Company of the 8th Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division. He remained at the 38th Parallel for the next 9 months. While at the 38th Parallel, he was assigned the duties of hauling ammunition for the 81-millimeter mortar section. He contracted malaria while there and drove a “chow” truck upon returning from the hospital.
After serving at the 38th Parallel, the entire 1st Cavalry Division was deployed to Japan, a northern island of Hokkaido where he was assigned the duties of mail clerk and also a jeep driver. The jeep was used mostly to transport officers He remained in Japan until late December 1952, when he was shipped to Fort Custer, Michigan. There on January 3, 1953, he received an honorable discharge.
Upon returning to his home in Ohio he traveled to North Carolina to meet a young lady with whom he been corresponding. A few weeks later he married Joyce. A. Mc Lawhorn of Kinston, North Carolina. They remain married for fifty-seven years. They have one son, Dana E. Moore, and two grandchildren.
His awards include The Combat Infantry Badge, The Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
