Herbert Lee was born June 15, 1923 in Kinston North Carolina. Herbert left his job at High Brothers Lumber Company January 21, 1943 to take a bus to Fort Bragg after being drafted into the Army. He received his basic training at Fort Bragg and was then sent to Camp Rucker, Ala. March 27, 1943 for Infantry Training. He was assigned to the 35th Infantry Division, 134th Infantry Regiment Company K.

After training, Herbert was sent to New York where he boarded the ship A. E. Anderson May 12, 1943, arriving in South Hampton, England May 25, 1943.

He lands in France July 5, 1944 where he was assigned to the XIX Corps where he fought in the Hedge Rows. While assigned to the 6th Armored Division, a shell wounded him on November 25, 1944.

Recovering from his wounds, he entered Germany February 1945. Then Holland and he reentered Germany March 3, 1945. He was then assigned to the 79`h Infantry Division.

On August 1945 after the atomic bombs were dropped, he was ordered back to the United States. Leaving on the Queen Mary, he arrived in New York September 10, 1945. He was discharged at Fort Bragg, North Carolina November 4, 1945.
