Sergeant Lemuel Taylor Gray was born in Lenoir County. He was a member of the 11th Field Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division. He was killed in action while fighting the enemy along the Kum River, South Korea on July 20, 1950.

On January 13, 2005, a box of records was delivered to Danna T Hardison (first cousin of Gray). The box had been stored in an attic in Columbia SC. It had been left for about 30 years before by someone thought to be the stepfather of Gray. In 2004, the owner of the home opened the fox and found the certificate awarding the Purple Heart and Silver Star, plus a picture of Gray’s funeral in August 1950. From the pictures, the owner of the home in SC was able to identify the funeral home as being in Kinston, NC. With that information, he was able to locate the cousin. He personally delivered the material to Danna Hardison.

Gray’s remains are interred at Westview Cemetery, Kinston, North Carolina.
