Earl was born September 4, 1943 to Ebern Ray Davis and Sallie Elizabeth Fields Davis. He was born in Greene County and has three sisters and three brothers, Alton Lee Davis, Lucy Vivian Davis Grant, Betty Joyce Davis vaughan, George Ray Davis, Audrey Jane Davis Brown, and Will Rogers Davis. He attended school at Snow Hill and graduated from Wheat Swamp High School in 1961. Earl worked after high school at Kinston Auto Parts in Kinston, NC, then on to DuPont where he retired in 2001 with 38 years service. He married Carol Lexine Wood Davis on April 3, 1964 and they had two children, Michael Earl Davis and Michelle Leigh Davis Bennett. They have six grandchildren, Michael Earl Davis, Jr., Rodney Caleb Davis, Andrew Bradley David, Kelly Ann Smith, Peter Ryan Bennett and Yana Danielle Bennett.

Earl served his country from 1966 until 1968 in the United States Army. His serial number is US53439545. He was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC., Ft. Eustus, VA., Pusan Korea and was Honorably discharged at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

When Earl was stationed at Pusan Korea, he was on the only floating HQ in the Army. It was the Floating HQ of the 70th Transportation Bn., and is was anchored at Pier 3 in the Pusan Harbor, Korea. The office barge was towed from Japan in 1952, where it has remained since. The unpowered vessels each measure 265 feet in length and 48 feet in beam, with 11 feet of draft. They remained tied but can be moved if the need arises. Earl was in the 95th Transportation Co.

North Korea hijacked the U.S. Navy Vessel the USS PUEBLO one week before Earl was suppose to come home, so his time over there was extended for one month to help be on guard. It was finally released.

When he came back to the states he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, where he was given his honorable discharge. Earl left the Army with the rank of E5.
