Allen Alton Mooring, from Jones County in North Carolina joined the United States Air Force in January 1956. He was assigned to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for basic training. After completing basic training, he was sent to Keesler Air Force Base at Biloxi, Mississippi for Air Transportation School. Following that school, he was transfer to Charleston Air Force Base, Charleston, South Carolina. Eighteen months later, he received orders for Lajes Field in the Azore Island for a two-year assignment. Then he was returned to Charleston. Twelve months later he had orders for an isolated assignment to Goose Bay, Labrador for fifteen months. When he completed the Goose Bay tour, in January 1962 he was issued orders to report to McCord Air Force Base in Washington State. Nine months later, Master Sergeant Mooring was selected for the “Presidential” Squadron stationed at Andrews Air Force, Maryland. He arrived at Andrews in October 1962 at which time he was assigned to the squadron that takes care of the President and dignitaries coming to Washington, DC.
In May 1968, he issued orders for a year-long tour in Republic on Vietnam. He returned to Andrews in June 1969 and remained there until 1975 when he received orders to report to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. He spent four years after which he returned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Goldsboro, North Carolina. After twenty-three years, seven months and twenty days of service. Master Sergeant Mooring retired as of July 1979
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four bronze leaf clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal with bronze two knot device, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze campaign star, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force PME Graduate Ribbon.
